日曜日に英語で実験した、銅から出来ているコインの汚れを落とす実験。
本にはpenniesになっていたけど、なかったので１０円玉で実験した。
コインの汚れの正体は酸化。
長い間空気に触れていたため、酸化され、黒ずみ、汚れていたのだ。
それを酸で洗うことで、綺麗になる。
これを”酸洗”といい、
メッキ加工をする時、汚れを落とす際に工場などで行われている方法らしい。
大人には簡単な原理だけど、子どもにはこんなことも、とても新鮮のようだ。
硬貨の色が変わっていくのを見て
息子は「Wow!These coins are getting shiny!」と驚いていた。

Sometimes when two different kinds of chemicals are mixed together a reaction happens.
The chemicals may change color.
You can make dirty coins become shiny clean as quick as one-two-three.
＜You’ll Need＞
three dark-colord coins
paper plate
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vinegar
＜Experiment＞
1,Arrange the coins at the center of the paper plate.
2,Sprinkle the salt on the coins and then pour the vinegar on top of the salt.
3,The coins will look shiny,bright copper.
＜Behind the Experiment＞
The coins were’nt dark because they were dirty.
They were tarnished.
What looks like dirt is really a chemical that
forms on the surface of copper
when it comes in contact with oxygen,one of the gases in the air.
Vinegar is a kind of chemical called an acid.
Acids that you can eat,like vinegar and lemon juice,taste sour.
Acids also often react with metals.
The vinegar dissolved the coating on the coins,
exposing the clean copper underneath.
The reaction would have happend even without salt,
but the salt sped up the reaction.
So the shiny copper appeared quickly.

＜実験前にしたこと＞
どんな実験をするのか、実験に必要な道具を知ってもらうため、
最初に息子に本を読んでもらい、それから実験道具を集めた。
息子がわからない語彙は電子辞書で調べてもらった。
reaction,sprinkle,tarnish,acid,dissolve,expose,等の単語がわからなかったようだ。
専門的な難しい単語もあるので、どういうことかも説明しながら調べた。

*他に銅から出来ているものはないか
*酸素とは何か
*酸素によって汚れる、黒ずむ”酸化”という現象とは
*酸っぱい物質、酸とは何か
*酸が酸化した部分を溶かして汚れを落とす現象、その方法を酸洗ということ
*この酸洗が他に何に応用されているか
この実験を通してわかることを英語で説明できることは説明したけど、
どうしてもわからないことは、日本語も使った。
この実験は塩を使わず、酢だけでも硬貨は綺麗になるらしいが、
塩を使うとなぜ綺麗になる時間が早くなるのか、それは残念ながらわからなかった。
スペルミス、間違った科学の解釈があったらお許しを・・・・
